How much backing do I need for longarm quilting?

The simple rule: add 4 inches on every side

At CK Quilting, we ask for backing that is 4″ larger on all sides than your quilt top.

For example:

  • A 60″ × 80″ quilt top needs backing about 68″ × 88″
  • A 90″ × 90″ quilt top needs backing about 98″ × 98″

Those extra inches give us room to pin and tension the quilt. If the backing is too small, we may need to delay quilting until we have enough fabric.

Measuring tip

  1. Measure your finished quilt top (width and length).
  2. Add 8 inches to each measurement (4″ on each side).
  3. That is the minimum size of your backing.

Buying backing from us

If you don’t want to piece or buy your own, we sell 100% cotton 108″ wide backing for $13 per yard. We’ll calculate how much you need from your quilt top size and round up to the next ¼ yard so you have enough for that 4″ border. We don’t currently offer minky or cuddle backing—if you want those, please send them with your quilt top. Backing options available for purchase from us.

Sending your own backing

You’re welcome to send your preferred backing. Please send it fully pieced and pressed, already the correct size. We don’t assemble backing for you. Mark the top of directional backs with a safety pin.
